Disaster and Recovery

Vicky’s story

Vicky, an Indigenous woman with significant health issues, is the sole carer for her children and her parents. She relies on Centrelink payments and is not able to work to increase her income to cover repairs to her home, which was damaged by the rainstorm in February 2022.

Her home had previously been damaged by a storm in November 2021, and her claim with her insurance company was not yet resolved. In both events, water came in through the roof and damaged her home. The insurer denied the claim on the grounds of maintenance and gradual deterioration. Vicky met us at a Resilient Homes information event close to her home.

Through our holistic social work-legal assistance approach, we were able to improve Vicky’s recovery from this complex situation of unmet legal and social support needs. We connected Vicky to a culturally appropriate service to support her in her caring role. She also received counselling and a variety of other social supports. The legal team successfully negotiated with the insurer to cover the repairs to her roof.
