Provides duty lawyer services to respondents in domestic violence proceedings in the Brisbane Magistrates Court

What We Provide

  • Duty lawyer assistance including legal advice, drafting court forms and documents, negotiations, representation in court (where resources permit and not in trials)
  • For men using violence who need case managed supports, referrals to our Court Plus for Men service
  • For related family law issues, referrals to our Family Advocacy and Support Service at the Brisbane Family Court and other Qld-wide Family Courts for family law legal assistance, social support and men’s support
  • For misidentified victim-survivors or victim-survivors of coercive controlling DFV, referrals to our Families and Domestic Violence Legal Service for further assistance
  • Referrals to other support services based at the Brisbane Magistrates Court

How It Works

No appointment required

Operates as part of the Specialist DFV Court justice response which includes:

  • dedicated magistrates
  • a specialist DFV court registry where specialist court staff are trained to offer support and information to people involved in DFV court matters
  • dedicated prosecutors
  • specialist DFV duty lawyers to provide advice and representation for people involved in DFV court matters
  • specialist DFV court support services for people involved in DFV court matters
  • infrastructure and security features to support safety (including security officers)
  • Provided at the Brisbane Magistrates Court Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4pm
