The Family Advocacy and Support Service assists unrepresented people impacted by family violence on their court date or with very urgent family law issues

Who It Helps

  • Unrepresented people impacted by family violence on their family court date or with very urgent family law issues even without a matter in court
  • Parenting, urgent recovery applications, grandparents’ rights
  • Separation and divorce
  • Small property pools and spousal maintenance
  • Brisbane and Qld-wide family court circuits (excluding some courts)

What We Provide

  • Duty lawyer assistance on the day of court
  • Very urgent family law assistance to start court proceedings or before the day of court
  • Information, legal advice, drafting court forms and documents, negotiations, representation in court (in limited situations)
  • Assistance with legal aid eligibility and completing forms
  • Social support, mental health support and men’s support
  • Safety planning, short-term counselling and brief mental health interventions, court support, connections with other relevant services

How It Works

Operates at the Brisbane Family Court Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and other court locations Qld-wide on their sitting dates.

Legal Aid Queensland performs all triaging and allocates people to Caxton legal and social support services.

Uses a multidisciplinary approach with lawyers and/or social workers assisting based on client needs.
